As the name implies Covered yarns are produced by covering one or two plies of yarn onto elastane or rubber. Polyester and Nylon are most widely used covering yarn whereas elastane commonly used are Spandex™, Lycra™ or Creora™.
Yarn feed speed, drafting and twist define the parameters of covered yarn desired to produce.
Covered yarns are used in lingerie, apparel, socks, seamless garments and various knitting and weaving fabrics.
Typically there are 2 main yarn covering techniques. Traditional covering (single or double covering) and Air covering with intermingling.
Main characteristics of Covered yarns include:
– High stretch and perfect elastic recovery,
– Depending on type of yarn, soft touch and aesthetics
– Prone to degradability and aging
